Back in mainstream, I consulted for a guy who owned a small auction site...it at one time was ranked #3 under true auction sites, being that was all they focused on etc.
Anyway, the guy was an idiot, and always working in the grey areas of law.
People were always calling him out on it on a number of online auction message boards out on the net. He was very successful at suing and winning a number of cases against quite a few people.
In one case he ended up owning the domain that some stuff was mentioned about him, in most he just scared people so much they shut the fuck up and went on with their lives. One of the biggest auction related boards out there
http://www.auctionwatch.com had to edit out any comments relating to that auction site for fear of getting in trouble, they finally just banned any discussion about the site good or bad.
I ended up doing more work for the guy for about 6 months after the initial consultation, damn that was one strange bit of time in my online life. Paid real well, but strange still.
Edited to add...he finally lost his original domain because the name and design was too much like ebay, the site was on it's way downhill already due to too much negative publicity. He's still attempting to make his way in the biz but I don't think it's working out too well.
