A lot of cities/states now offer incentive programs so people start trying out other methods of energy. They really are not advertised much though. I know California was paying like half of the setup fee for wind turbines...
As time goes on, it will be cheaper and cheaper to set up alternate installations like this. I always kind of wonder why these rich billionaire philanthropists spend all sorts of money on aid and whatnot instead of into research and development that could seriously help mankind for the long run. There is something wrong with aid of course... but research and development is so important and unfortunately governments do not always have the money to properly fund it and when they do it's all bureaucratic red tape anyway...
