Dozens of same-sex couples were legally married Monday night, marking the 30 days it took for the California Supreme Court's decision to take effect, but on Tuesday, county clerks across the state and in San Diego braced for a huge number of gay weddings...

...Phyllis Lyon, 84, and Del Martin, 87, were the first to say "I Do" on Monday, becoming legally married after spending more than 50 years together.

"We're very happy and we're very grateful for all of you coming," Lyon said.

The couple was also first to be married back in 2004 when the city of San Francisco and its mayor, Gavin Newsom, issued marriage licenses to more than 4,000 same-sex couples.

However, those marriages were then invalidated by the courts. The couples sued for the right to marry and won.

"Two extraordinary people that have lived extraordinary lives that have spent the greater part of a half-century fighting for justice," Newsom said.

Outside of San Francisco City Hall, there were cheers of support and cries of protest.
