I would suggest going with a reputable contractor to get the work done. Sure you will pay more but the job will turn out better and you won't have someone that has been in jail or something walking around your house.

I just saw a program on MSNBC about contractors that were in jail for a number of different crimes trying to get work and would either take the money and not do the job or rob your house at a later date.

Go with a bonded contractor and investigate the bonding agency the contactor uses for further information.
