I just saw a program on MSNBC about contractors that were in jail for a number of different crimes trying to get work and would either take the money and not do the job or rob your house at a later date.
Go with a bonded contractor and investigate the bonding agency the contactor uses for further information.

best post. do research just like everything else. because bonded does not always mean good either. I just got done 100k in repairs on a project a bonded contractor fucked up
