What server they are on is only one small way to tell if its crosslinking, or from the same nest. The easiest way is backlinks and outbounds. When google looks at your whole network "the big picture" its to easy to point out that sites are from the same server, by the backlinks and by where those pages go. They see a complete snapshot of the web surrounding the domain in question.
Text, outbounds, images, page size, date, backlinks, even spelling mistakes, are all other ways they can easily catch you for creating your own little network.
Having 40 domains on differant c-classes, then linking them all up to one main one, is still going to get you caught. You could not produce enough seperate, quality backlinks to show them otherwise and chances are, would just turn into a wasted 40 domains.
Go for rankings that are rocks, make them last, why fuck around.
