well, beeing from sweden and with some experience on the subject. I dont think its protection from our harsh winter weather.(we are not naked on the streets, contrary to popular belief)
I think simply its a evolutionary remnant. As they can get away with it. while similiarly haired ravens would look like Stalins half brother and have some problems attracting suitors. Or maybe they spend all day plucking their nasty whiskers
