Trial delayed for woman accused of killing pregnant Pasco woman
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

The murder trial for a Kennewick woman accused of killing a pregnant woman to steal her nearly full-term baby was delayed Thursday for nearly seven months.

Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong was in Benton County Superior Court to waive her right to have her aggravated first-degree murder trial within 60 days of her arraignment.

The new trial date is March 30.

"You understand you're going to be locked up during this entire time ..." Judge Robert Swisher asked her.

The 23-year-old nodded, while attorney Dan Arnold said his client understood.

Sisouvanh Synhavong also agreed to extend the 30-day deadline that prosecutors have to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

Prosecutor Andy Miller now has until Feb. 10 to make his decision.

"This is done to accommodate the defense," Arnold said.

Seattle attorney Michael Iaria is the lead attorney on the case because he is approved by the state to handle death penalty cases. Arnold is co-counsel.

The defense requested extra time so it could compile information about Sisouvanh Synhavong for Miller to consider.

If Miller opts against seeking the death penalty, Sisouvanh Synhavong faces life in prison without parole, if convicted.

Defense attorney Christopher Swaby also was appointed to represent Sisouvanh Synhavong. She now has four on her case, including Rafael Gonzales, the indigent defense coordinator for Benton and Franklin counties.

Swaby was appointed on an interim basis when Sisouvanh Synhavong made her first court appearance late last month, but was withdrawn from the case once Iaria agreed to take it.

Arnold said Swaby developed a relationship with Sisouvanh Synhavong and "we have asked Mr. Swaby to assist us ... (and he agreed) at no charge to help me and to help my client."

Araceli Camacho Gomez, 27, of Pasco was found dead at Columbia Park in Kennewick early June 28. She had multiple stab wounds to her chest and her unborn son had been cut from her womb.

Sisouvanh Synhavong is accused of trying to pass the newborn baby off as her own.

The baby remains in serious condition at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, a hospital spokeswoman said Thursday.
