Imagine Cuba would say that Hawai belongs to it, though Hawai had a different idea about that. Then Cuba attacs Hawai and US sends troops to Hawai to drive cuban troops out.
Exactly the same situation is in the Conflict between Russia and Georgia.
Georgia attacked Osetia whose population wants to be an independent country or a part of Russia and not Georgia. After the attack the government and population of Osetia asked the Russians to drive Georgian troops out. So actually russia is not attacking Georgia it is helping Osetia to drive georgian troops away.
