It turns out that contrary to popular belief, going to the end of the lane and merging at the end (the "zipper method") may actually be a better for traffic than merging at the first sign that the lane ends up ahead. Reason being is that it can use the full capacity of both lanes instead of creating an artificial one-lane section of people (who don't let anyone else in) prior to the closing of the other lane. The idea would be, instead of merging right away, all the cars would slow down a little and start staggering, and readying room for one car between them and the car ahead, having a car in the other lane prepare itself for entering that spot, and then gradually entering that lane. Of course this method requires plenty of cooperation from everyone involved which won't happen anytime soon.

Anyway, my answer to this thread has to do with living in Costa Rica. What really pisses the hell out of me are locals who cross the road and try their best not to see you, they get right in front of you and look the other way. Being a foreigner means that hitting one of them would get me nailed to the cross, so you gotta be extra careful and actually avoid these assholes.
