They do it smarter than Democrats do. That's why it works. The John McCain black daughter was done under the radar via push-polling. The media took the rest of it. They didn't have morons run around screaming it out at the top of their lungs.
So yes, Republicans play the same games and are often much worse. But the way they do it is infinitely better than the way Democrats do. What do you think works better: An anonymous phone call poll asking people what they think about Palin's underage daughter being pregnant, or some half-retarded wonk running around message boards posting every odd rumor he sees on the web.
Nothing wrong with attacking, just do it smart.
