Yet they were much skinnier than we are.

The reason?

Food is so cheap.

When my parents were kids the grocery bill was more than the mortgage....that's almost never the case today.
Since food is so cheap and plentiful, people are eating more and more of it.

One of the reasons food is so cheap is farm subsidies. One of the biggest subsidies goes to corn growers. This made corn syrup cheaper to use than sugar, so food manufacturers started using it.

So while obesity and corn syrup are plotting the same graph....I think it's more for the reason that corn syrup made food cheaper and people started eating more of it....not that corn syrup is more "evil" than something like sugar or molasses.
actually when we were kids the grocery bill was alot cheaper. We were talking about it this weekend. MY mother said I dont know how families do it now its so expensive to shop. When you were kids , only your father worked and we ate 3 meals a day at home 7 days a week and 6 of those meals had meat. My mother said I dont know how families do it now.
