The hoards of free shit on that site don't have a thing to do with why there are so many surfers who like it.
Color means something to people who don't want to put out a bunch of crap sites and people who care if you took the time to make something that's appealing. Why else would the big sites take so much time and money to design something interesting. If a piece of crap site sells just as well, then why bother.

1) learn how to use the quote feature.
2) even crap can sell if marketed correctly. However, I'm not talking about crap. I'm talking about content. Good, fresh content will sell your site if you market correctly, and have a good presentation. A white background with black lettering and no fancy graphics will sell great if you have the content to back it up.
3) The big sites spend a lot of money on designers because they are professionals, and need to maintain a professional image to other webmasters who push their product.
