fix it yourself next time then if you don't think there is value in what they did for you. I'm a journeyman plumber, and $1k for a reroute on a slab leak is cheap. Not to mention I know how to do it. do you? I personally love going to a call where some asshat like you thought they knew better or could do it themselves and then ended up causing a ton more work because they didn't know what they were doing. there is value in experience and knowledge, like it or not.

regarding ASM's $35k bill and being privy to the guys profit margin... sounds like your plumber is just a good guy in telling you this info. I'd venture to say that he doesn't pull only 12% all the time, and averaging out at the end of the year he does ok. there is nothing wrong with someone making a comfortable living because they know how to do something that most others don't know how to do.
