today people use all kinds of cakes for birthday cakes but when i was a kid you went to the store and that's the birthday cake they made.

The cake has to be made french style like from a french bakery, the make good cakes with nice light cream that's not sickeningly sweet. Any cake from a grocery store will have nasty icing on it. Don't eat cake from the grocery store. If you had a cake from a nice bakery it wouldn't be like that.
