You can sue for $500, much less than 5k actually.

I won a case in small claims for about $1,200.00, but then you have to chase the broke ass person for the money.

Stuck a private investigator up his ass, with a judgment they can go for their bank account, and then a 30 day hold on the money through some state legal department and 30% cut to the PI, I got paid.

So after chasing the guy, and paying someone to get the money, I surely didn't make a profit.

People are fucking losers!
