Boston, MA (AHN) - A Massachusetts senator said Wednesday she will continue her reelection campaign despite getting arrested Tuesday for bribery charges, including allegedly tucking $1,000 in payola into her bra last year.
A statement from Democratic state Senator Dianne Wilkerson handed out by a volunteer outside her campaign headquarters in Roxbury urged voters to reelect her and said she could not reveal details of allegations she took eight bribes totaling $23,500 on several occasions.
The 15-year Statehouse veteran also berated U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan, who is investigating the bribery charges the past 18 months, for timing of her arrest during the campaign period.
Wilkerson, 53, appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Magistrate Timothy Hillman, who set her hext hearing on Nov. 17 and ordered her to post a $50,000 bail.
A witness who reported the Wilkerson's bribe taking ways to the FBI sparked the investigation of the senator. The FBI asked the same witness to pose as a businessman and give Wilkerson $500 in June 2007 to help him get a liquor license for a club. Other informants gave her bribes, which she accepted.
If found guilty, Wilkerson faces up to 40 years in prison and $250,000 in fine.
