Are more content providers shooting with HD now, or are there still some guys out there using the old standard def camcorders?

I have a Canon GL1 and it's been a great camcorder over the years. Not the best in low level lighting, but tolerable.
What are webmaster's and content providers using for camcorders these days? I have heard that some of the newer HD camcorders and about 3 years behind their time when it comes to the amount of lighting they require to produce a nice vibrant video. Is this true?
