RAZR was a good phone by 2004-2005ish standards. I haven't used one since v3, they're up to like V9 and have several variations of form factors (RIZR, KRZR, etc).
It does have the flaws mentioned, especially being prone to get dust in via the cracks. If you tote it in your pocket, the screen will be in bad shape in under a year. If you have excellent hearing, they also have a constant hum or low range beep in early versions.
I toted one for a year or two, served me well, pretty tough, it survived many drops unscathed.
Now, you should be able to find a lot better phone for the same or less money. If you just happen to be attached to the motorola interface, I'd recommend the RIZR (it's a slider).
For people who just want a basic phone without all of the smartphone features and gimmicks, I always recommend Nokia. Easy to use, cheap, and tough as nails. I've never managed to kill one.
