Yes, You can do it...
Buying or funneling your existing traffic to a sponsor has two big advantages:
1 ) You move large volumes relatively easy (50k uniques per day to sponsor landing page is quite easy to achieve).
2 ) If the sponsor fails, you just change the redirect link to another sponsor.
You need the following:
1 ) Good converting sponsor. With good converting I mean a sponsor that can convert whatever you throw at him.
2 ) Good revshare percentage. You will not make good money with this using PPS sponsors. Revshare is the way is you plan to work volumes. With good revshare percentage I mean something between 55% and 75%.
3 ) A good traffic discriminator script. You don't want to send to your sponsor traffic he cannot convert (US traffic to german site for example). Same if you end sending lesbian traffic to a hardcore site.
4 ) White label site is preferred but not really needed. If you have a white label site it's just that you don't lose sales on bookmarkers. When you are moving 50k - 100k daily traffic to the sponsor gate it's a good chunk of traffic over time. Having saved one only sale per year with this already pays the white label site domain.
5 ) Traffic suppliers... lots of them. I usually just skip the traffic brokers and deal directly with the traffic sources closing direct deals.
As for sponsors, I usually have the rule to make $100k per account and then change sponsor. That way I keep the leftovers of the revshare meanwhile I am building my revshare pool with another sponsor. If I don't find a sponsor I just start my own paysite and redirect to it... Once I find a sponsor again I let the paysite die.
The logical thinking would be to keep the paysites and ditch completely the sponsors, but running a paysite requires lots of time and work and the final money result is not enough to justify keeping the paysite hassle on my side.
The biggest problem you will face is finding good sponsors that convert properly. In my case I make a couple of accounts per sponsor (one per internet company I own). One is just to test the performance before melting their servers with traffic using the account that will drive the big traffic hunk to them. that way I can continue using the small/test account as controlling account just to see fluctuations in the sponsor performance because when driving big traffic to a given sponsors most of them tend to turn on the shaver on the big account thinking that it may slip behind the radar since it's all big numbers and $1k or $2k more or less may not get noticed.
