Ignore Sticky, he is obviously pro windows with zero background with the mac. I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2.4ghz and it's just as powerful as any desktop machine I've ever owned. The only step up from that would be a Mac Pro, but you said notebook
You should be able to render just fine with a Macbook Pro...
