Most of the stuff that's legal in the US is absolute garbage. The only US legal brand I'd bother with is Lucid, who is made by the same people that are pretty much responsible for the absinthe revival.
Have you ever had Pernod? Pernod was originally absinthe. Now it's just a pastis (absinthe without the wormwood or thujone) like Ricard. It's an anisette liquor, so it's in the same real as Ouzo, only it tastes much better.
Avoid any absinthe from the czech republic. i don't care how much they claim to have made improvement, it's all pretty much the worst thing that I've ever put in my mouth.
If you are going to drink absinthe, it's best that you not go for the cheapest options, because you'll only end up getting the wrong impression about it. If you based your opinion of meat on Spam alone, you'd probably be a vegetarian.
