Here's a way to test your hosting company.... Call them up at 3am their time and see if anyone picks up the phone.

It's the same with a lot of companies though. What's good for you might not be for someone else. It's the way of the world.
Oh and the 3am thing, been there done that. Email response time not sufficient either.
I am now happily with my host, but I do know others that have had problems with them.
