My perspective on problems with the industry...
The problem with the adult industry is not just the worsening state of the economy these days.
I tend to think its partially a customer base that's grown tired of seeing regurgitated, creativity-lacking, same 'ole mediocre crap that's churned out assembly-line style by unimaginative producers who'd be better off finding another line of work. Too many people riding the bandwagon of banality.
Except for a few producers who still manage to come up with new and interesting angles to work - much of what's out there these days is formulated garbage that's been done-to-death. Content created by people who think buying a camera also includes the 'Photographer' nametag in the same box. The same people who think the 'auto' setting means "...automatically takes a good photo."
Several colleagues I chat with often in the bdsm/fetish industry who I consider to be highly creative and willing to experiment with their images - are mostly doing good sales for themselves...despite the doom-and-gloom recession. They don't crank out pablum for the masses...but rather, produce provocative and visually interesting photos that demonstrate the time, effort and care that's gone in to their creation.
This industry needs more folks who take the time to think in creative terms and create products that are both new and unique - as opposed to renting a cheap motel room and telling the model "Go stand by the window, honey - while I press this little doo-hickey button".
