When they were coming up with plans for the European Union it was modeled after the Soviet Union. The idea was to have a "nicer" Soviet Union. Instead of expanding their empire by force like the Soviets the EU expands it by what amounts to, basically, bribery. They expand their centralized, unaccountable to the people, power base under the guise of a democracy, but if you answer wrong you are either given another chance to answer correctly or they just go ask someone else entirely (e.g. no referendum. politicians decide.).

As far as the Euro goes Milton Friedman felt that it would never last through a serious recession. We have a chance now to see if his prediction is correct.......
