They were running wild mean Gene until I started banning IP blocks. That cut it down. Now I ban, and block most of them before they even can do their e-mail confirmation for sign up. However, they still try.
It seems like a pointless exercise when there are so many more effective ways to link bait, affiliate market, etc.

I think they must use some form of automation. When I was dealing with this on my forum one day I banned allthe ip's and extensions and the next day I had 500 new members from similar .coms At that point the forum meant nothing to me and it was not worth my time so I closed it. But in the future I will need to do one again so I hope by then this stupid behavior is a thing of the past.
