You might also consider Linux - it's free, almost all of the software is free,
and it's secure. It's the same as what your server probably, so as you use
your own computer you learn to work with the server too and you can more
easily test scripts and such. We've been using Linux exclusively for many
years and it's worked quite well for us. A good distribution for starting out,
and actually for advanced users too, is Fedora.
