Some webmasters are uneducated in not knowing that what THEY are seeing inside a members area of a site might not be the same thing a new member sees.

Good post and raises interesting points, this is from my perspective.
For two years the content production and sales side of the business has gone into decline. Even those who said exclusive was the key have stopped or slowed down shooting. Or lowered the prices. Recently the decline increased.
Few but non exclusive for what ever lame reason they can give. If it were saturated, it would mean we were selling and would all be shooting more for our stores and few of us are. Some of the sales have gone to the DVD content industry, which is strange. Why buy DVD 20 others will buy if "saturated" content is a problem?
So sites are not updating and going to rotating to keep members. Maybe that's the right route. With connection speeds what they are today maybe this is a good way to ensure the members will stay to see what is coming tomorrow. I think it depends on the size of your portfolio. Sites with 40 movies all the same can't rotate, sites with 200 all the same can but will members stay long to see another cloned scene that's similar to what they saw for the last week?
Those sites with a mix of content, in the same niche, from different shooters can afford to rotate and it does keep members. Can I say sites shot by the same people for over 20 years definitely retain. ;)
It may not be new content, but it is new to the members seeing it and they are the ones spending money.

sometimes creating new sites is more profitable than updating existing ones.

If this were true people would be buying content, do you see stores shooting new, custom shooters with full order books or something else?
