Not exactlty. Mac OS X is really just a legal rip of Free BSD (yes, it's a Unix system). But as about Windows so there are 2 absolutely different branches of it:
1) MS-DOS based one:
Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, Me
2) NT-based ones:
Windows NT 3, NT 4, 2000, XP, Vista
I don't think you are using Win95/98/Me, so forget about MS-DOS. Windows NT is not compatible with MS-DOS at all (you can run MS-DOS applications via built-in virtual DOS machine only).
And about CPU's, sorry to tell you the truth, but you are wrong. They are
absolutely identical on all IBM PC clones including the Intel-based Mac's. The only difference is label at the top of the box
