There could be several reasons..
How old is the spare? If it's more than a couple years old, it could be a hazzard. Old tires separate while you are driving and could kill you.
Maybe the spare was a different kind of tire and would affect handling. It could be a radial and he was replacing with bias. You can't mix them.
It really is better to replace tires in pairs. Is $248 worth you losing control and crashing into a tree, or a school bus?
