Sloppy game. Too much time off from the end of their season to the bowls. The whole BCS is fucked. Any team not from a "traditional power" conference gets screwed every year. They need a playoff system (like Div II, Div III) to really settle who is the best team. Otherwise you may as well just say that USC is No1 in the West, Utah is No1 in the MidWest, Texas is No1 in the South and Florida is No1 in the East...
