Russian Oil companies control about 40% of the oil in Iraq. Plus they have a contract to develop the West Qurna oil fields and other major reserves.
Most of the big Russian mulitnationals are controlled by organized crime types or have connections to the underworld. So these are hardcore businessmen that don't want to loose their deals in Iraq.
