Take for example the lol cats phenomenon. This originated from from "Caturday" on 4chan - basically every Saturday people post picture of cats with funny captions. Someone thought this was clever and built a blog around it. This blog sold for 2 or 4 million (i don't recall which - but it wasn't spare change) and eventually morphed into this:
