The trick is to be somewhat honest. Don't pretend it's someone else's site, but instead make clear it's yours and ask for feedback/opinions/whatever.
Expect a fair amount of trolls and abuse - getting that is a given. But if you make it clear you're not a drive-by spammer but just a regular btard who happens to make sites, the reaction generally is fairly positive. Especially if you give something back - like a dump of your favorite images from a certain niche.

But you are correct if you hit them straight up they are surprisingly reasonable. My comments weren't directed towards your approach but to those "enterprising" spammers who would just write a bot to flood comment spam, which is what I'm mainly advising against.
