Those balls do work well. But the best thing I ever did for my back was take up Pilates for about a month or so. You learn to isolate the transversus abdominus muscle. The way it's been explained to me is that it's basically a natural weight lifting belt. But due to the sedate life most people lead these days, the muscle is generally a lot weaker than it should be and responds sluggishly. Pilates specifically targets this muscle. It is central in pretty much every pilates exercise. The result is when you do pick something up or make fast movements, the muscle responds immediately. I haven't had back problems since.
