Ignore all the pussies, bitches, and softhearted faggots that are undoubtedly going to make their way into this thread.
At 5 years old, I was shooting gophers with my dad's single shot .22 all day long, i loved it. but i had hand the staple 'daisy red ryder' for a year easy by that time. I'd say at 5 years old, a good startr pistol, would be a Marksmen or Daisy BB gun. They aren't overly expensive, aren't likely to kill much of anything or hurt anyone too badly in the case of an accident. Spend some time withhim, teach him the rules, and make sure they are enforced upon him, If he jackasses around with it, points it at someone (even unloaded) etc etc, take it a way in a snap. I used to love laying int he grass with my red ryder shootin bumble bees off my mom's flowers. Get him a BB gun and he'll blow hours in the backyard shooting pop cans up. He doesn't need a handcannon to have fun or learn proper shooting ethics. give him some time with the pistol until you are comfortable that he has the proper ethics instilled in him, then bump him up a .22 revolver or something rad like that...
