I picked a date also (a Sunday)... and told everyone I was quiting on that date, especially my work colleagues. I said when I come in on monday I won't be smoking.
Sunday come and in all honesty I had the one cig I had left in my box in the morning... then I put my nicotene patch on. I actually went to a BBQ that day and the urge to smoke was strong after a beer. I resisted.
When I went back to work I still went outside with my colleague when he was having a cig but just had a chat with him and didn't smoke. Some of my workmates said I'd smoke again especially those that had failed to give up themselves. I said I wasn't a backslider like them and I had given up.
I still went to the pub also in the evenings and saw it as a personal challenge to be able to go without smoking. At that time smoking was still allowed in pubs. That changed a few weeks later when you could no longer smoke in UK pubs and the smokers went outside to have a fag.
It was about 8 weeks later, still using the patches that I went on holiday to Thailand. The 1st day it had got to about 6 in the evening and I realised I hadn't put the patch on. I rushed back to my hotel to put it on and it made me dizzy.
I forgot the next day and again put the patch on in the evening. I guess I was that far removed from my daily routine that I forgot again.
The next day I remembered, but figured I didn't need to patch anymore.
I've been nicotene free from then.
