If the 7 year old is a girl, the Fancy Nancy books are cute. And you can never go wrong with Curious George or Dr. Suess, IMHO

I was around 12 or so when I first read the Chronicles of Narnia and I loved them. I got my 12 year old niece and a friend of mine's 12 year old daughter into them as well and they both are loving them. I can highly recommend them for any kid that age.
