Those weren't beans, they were Buds. You're supposed to break the buds apart thoroughly and take out any seeds or stems if they have any. After that you can roll it in cigarette paper or cigar paper and smoke it. Or you can put it in a pipe, bong, or vaporizer... whatever floats your boat. There's no wrong way to smoke some good ol' African Gold.
