How to find intrder in wireless network?

Hi Guys and wireless network experts.

is there a way that i can find out where from and who is connected to my home network (wireles- non secured). I asume that is someone from neighbours because I see heavy upload and download.

    thanks

If you've got a standard wireless setup it is probably a neighbor very close to you. To pinpoint it we would need to get into the details of Radio Direction Finding, which would be more expensive and time consuming than it's worth.

If you'd really like to catch them and offer to share the cost of your internet, secure your wireless network with a good password and then see which of your neigbors starts driving to Starbucks a lot, or has the phone or cable company van in their driveway installing their own internet. You could also put some foil over your antenna and see if you spot any neighbors wandering around their backyards with a laptop in their hands searching for a stronger signal!

Many wireless routers actually tell you what computers are connected to the network. Its usually listed under the network status section under the routers admin menu. If you see a computer that is not yours then you can confirm there is an intruder. To actually know where the offending computer is located is a toughie.

+1 on securing your network with encryption.

Yeah you should have a IP login for your router and it should display all active connections

so it's slaving onto the wireless in your desktop?

Get a router, you can't do anything about that and the number of security problems you're facing is crazy, routers are cheap, spend 40 and fix this problem

It all depends what do you want to do to your intruder.

Option 1 --> secure your wireless network and forget about him

Option 2 --> Get a network sniffer and let it log all the network activity for a couple of days. Then scan the logs for passwords and personal information. Then own him so bad that he will not even try to thing again about using your wireless network... and probably no other unsecured wireless network.

Option 3 --> Install a transparent proxy on your network, so you can monitor everything he does and any page he surfs while using your net. You can even change pages and capture information on the fly from the transparent proxy.
I had so much fun with doing this to my neighbor, that I recommend it to everyone who has idiot neighbors in wireless range.

You could do a MAC address filtering to only allow connexions from your laptop.

The key here I think it is not finding out who is using your open internet connexion but to secure it so they can not do that.
