Everyone I know who's had one fail, has had it fail out side of the warranty period. The cost to send it back to Microsoft to be fixed is over $100 and could take up to 3 weeks of your time.
Seems like a pretty simple solution to crack it open, grab some shit from Radio Shack, and take 30 minutes to do it yourself.
It's not difficult. I've done a bunch of them. I've got a pile of what were once broken units sitting here waiting for new homes.
