I think you fail to see the big picture and focus on # of sales as the criteria, instead of focusing on the ratios.
Ratios are the measurement, regarding 'free or not'; How many percents buy something - how many don't. If your TGP (or tubesite) traffic generally generates 1:1000 overall to all sponsors, and you start agressively promoting one sponsor - along with massive increase in traffic - its likely your # of sales will increase too, for that particular sponsor.
The example with Monty Python, 230 times more # of sales, is probably not a result of better ratios. Its a result of massive traffic increase, i.e. marketing efforts and PR (through the media and spots on Youtube).
I do not know the Amazon ratios for Monty Python, but I'm pretty sure a significant increase in ratios would be time limited, unless they produce something new (which they won't), get even more traffic, and/or continue marketing efforts. The traffic and sales will otherwise slowly/suddenly die.
