It will still be a long ways away. HIV antiviral pharmacology is still at the integrase stage. A far cry from AZT but still a long way from actually curing that disease.
On a separate note: It kinda boggles the mind to think of what other disease is out there, just waiting to jump the species barrier. HIV was originally a benign monkey virus that was passed on to humans because of finger cuts during the processing of monkey carcasses (aka bush meat). There's much more fucked up shit out there--like eating civet cats in China produced SARS, etc.
