When the dog was a couple of years old, we lived on a hobby farm. My father went down to our sailboat at the time and found 5 kittens that had been abandoned by their mother (we guess) and were near death curled up in a bucket. They were brought home, of course, and nursed back to health. The chocolate lab would collect all the kittens up and sleep with them between her front paws. She'd let them suckle too, even though she obviously didn't produce milk.

I'd go as far to say all Labs are awesome pets. My Golden Lab is a total big pet. He loves attention from people, he is always happy to see you. We have him well trained so as he doesnt get overpowering for guests in our house. Anytime I tell him to go lie down and leave people alone I find its my guests who don't want him to. They just love tickling him and playing with him.
When I got him as a puppy we had a Cat who was 12-13 years old and I never thought it would work. Turned out the dog was scared of the Cat. I remember coming home one time to find my dog lying outside his bed staring at it with my Cat lying in the bed cleaning himself. This big Labrador just lying there hoping to get his bed back at some point. The Cat took to him as well tho, he didnt mind him but if the Dog got too close on certain occasions the cat would flip him a warning shot with his paw at the dogs nose. No claws or anything, just a tap on the nose to tell him to back off.
When my Cat died in 2006 I swear my Dog was a bit different for a couple of weeks. He would go around looking for the Cat. Or so I thought.. who knows what he was really doing but he defo acted a bit different in the first 2-3 weeks.
