You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and if you start off with the honey you can always change to vinegar later.

I had an engine replaced 6 months out of warranty because I called the Warranty people, and explained the situation. They agreed that the damage most _probably_ had started inside the warranty period even if the complete break down didn't happen until 6 months later. They covered the whole thing, and I got a 1 year warranty on the new engine they put in. Didn't have to yell, didn't have to scream.

Idiots.
I have a GREAT relationship with my mechanics. My guy in Parksville loves me, because I used to give him a ton of business from friends and family. So we all got VERY VERY good prices. He was very fair, because I was a nice, friendly easy to work with guy who helped him grow his business.

Same with my current guy in CA. I have to take my bmw in on tuesday and he is checking the entire thing and replacing the part for $90. The BMW dealer quoted me $800. Why is my guy giving me such a good deal? I'm easy to work with and give him business.

I always get a second opinion, sometimes a third. But the people I keep relationships with ALWAYS offer a better price, better service and continue to surprise me. The CA mechanic has thrown in so much extra stuff. For example I took an older car in for an oil change and he noticed a tail light was out and I had a dent in my hood. He fixed both for no cost.

If the first time I went in I was a dick and demanded all sorts of freebies etc - he would never do that sort of thing.
