Yeah it's ashame you lost out. It's more common practice to use 20-40% down in my experience. But either way you're still out money and that's not right.

In my opinion it's always a smart idea to have the freelanced work backed by another skilled worker, just in case something goes wrong. So if his worker flaked out on him, he has another one ready to go. That way the customer will almost never get fucked over.
