It's hard to pin down the birth of rock and roll, but the first rock and roll RECORDS preceded Elvis by half a generation, and were made by a fellow named Louis Jordan in the late 1940's.
The very fact that anyone finds Rock even listenable today is attributable to black music, since one of the key elements of Pop/Rock/etc - the minor 7th interval - was considered "dissonant" and "noise" toward the beginning of the twentieth century, nevermind stuff like the flat 5 (which we hear as "musical" after several generations of Jazz).
