Without reputable links in to your website you will rank lower sites that have reputable links in with that keyword. Thats only one formula for ranking out of many that Google has such as domain name age, registration length, bad neighborhood links out, various traffic reporting sites about your site, etc. In the end the greatest single piece of advice for SEO is reputable links in with various high niche keywords.
