That's the direction development is taking. Look at Gmail, Gtalk and Google Docs to see some early examples.
It's the whole point of Ajax - turning a single page into an entire application.

While somewhat true, the problem is that it's taking funcionality that should be built into the browser and forcing site developers to provide it instead with tools that are half assed at best... And because those site developers don't have a clue as to how to code properly or how to develop user friendly and efficient applications, you get bloated super slow and crappy messes.
Was wrong about firefox... I had overridden a setting and it was preventing the true popups.. Now I can't remember why I had overridden that setting but it had something to do with some pages opening in a completely new firefox instead of in a tab.
