It is understandable.
About 3 years ago my brother was taking his then 9 year old daughter to her first sleepover. A friend of her's from school was having a slumber party/birthday party. This is the first time she was staying the night at a non-family member house. My brother is nervous as it is then he gets there, sees the parents (he had spoken to them a few times on the phone before and thought they were good people) and sees that wife is missing half of her teeth and he spins around and takes her back to the car. He couldn't leave his daughter with them. She was pissed, but he said she looked like a meth head so he wasn't going to do it.
As it turns out she had been in a car accident about 4 months before and was still waiting for some other surgery before she got her teeth fixed so there was nothing to worry about. During the drive home his daughter explained this so when he got home he called them back and apologized then drove her back.
